Addressing the European Court of Human Rights

The Guide to Addressing the European Court of Human Rights is designed to help citizens understand how this international court makes decisions and when and how they can approach it to protect their rights. The guide explains the importance of the European Convention on Human Rights, who can apply to the Court, what a petition entails, how to submit it, the types of rights violations that can be appealed, and the domestic legal remedies that must be exhausted before filing with the Court. It also outlines the procedure before the Court in Strasbourg, citizens’ rights to appeal its decisions, and the steps to take if a state refuses to implement the Court’s judgment.
